At The Game Awards, held in Las Vegas this past weekend, CD Projekt Red, developers of the highly anticipated The Witcher 3 : Wild Hunt unveiled a new ominous trailer, which could keep any fan of the games on the edge of their seat, and could send any fan of the books into overdrive. Alongside the new trailer, the Polish developers also announced that the game would include a second playable character alongside Geralt, and that this character was to be found within the trailer.

Let’s take a look at the possibilities, shall we?

The Monk: Delivering exposition at the beginning of the trailer shows that he experienced the attack of the Wild Hunt first hand. Playable prologues with a character other than the protagonist are not unheard of, but this doesn’t seem worthy of all this build-up.

Yennefer: The black-haired sorceress has been a major character in the book series, and shares close ties with Geralt, the primary protagonist. Her significant role in past events make her a strong candidate, and playing as a sorceress would certainly mix gameplay up a bit.

Lambert: The other witcher fighting alongside Geralt from about the one minute mark. Seeing as he is a fellow witcher, gameplay would not need to be changed, so he seems to be the likeliest candidate, but he hasn’t had much significance story-wise so far, however this may yet change.

Ciri: She’s the one every reader of the books is secretly wishing for. The driving force behind the events of the novels, Cirilla, descendant of the ruling family of Cintra, is a witcher-in-training, a sorceress, and a seer, who is granted unique abilities by her elder blood. Since she seems to be central to the storyline of the game, as well as having stolen the spotlight in the books, confirming that she will be playable will have fans frantically whacking money at their screens.

Whoever the second playable character turns out to be, the more and more we know about Wild Hunt, the higher our anticipations go. Knowing CD Projekt Red, they won’t dissapoint, and a satisfying AAA release would be refreshing.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is now releasing May 19th, 2015 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
