Nintendo offered us a brand new Nintendo Direct earlier today! Here are all the goods from that wonderful stream, including a release date and price for the New 3DS, a new Fire Emblem game and more!
A new Fire Emblem title on the way
A new Fire Emblem title from Intelligent Systems (the same team who did Fire Emblem: Awakening) is on the way for Nintendo 3DS. Kozaki Yusuke returns to do the character design, while well-known comic writer Shin Kibayashi will work on the story. Like previous titles, this one will have the player making choices, but they are said to impact the world in a greater way this time around.
Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition coming to Europe and North America
Explore the Mushroom Kingdom in Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition for the Nintendo 3DS, which takes the Puzzle & Dragons framework and gives it a shiny coat of Mario paint (huhuhu). The match-three puzzle game will feature lots of addictive gameplay with RPG elements and dungeon crawling. The original title, Puzzle & Dragons Z will also come bundled with the Super Mario Bros. edition. Both games will be available in May.
Pokémon Shuffle available as a freemium title in 3DS eShop
The match-three title, akin to the Puzzle & Dragons game, will be available in February via the 3DS eShop. You battle Pokémon and add them to your team, some of them can Mega Evolve and clear many matching rows and columns at once. You use hearts every time you battle and these hearts can be replenished via items obtained with StreetPass, in-game, or purchased using Nintendo points or a credit card.
Wii games to be downloadable software on Wii U
Metroid Prime Trilogy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and Punch-Out!! will be some of the first titles to appear as downloads via the Wii U eShop. The games can be launched directly from the main menu of the Wii U, automatically switching your Wii U into Wii Compatibility Mode. You will still need to use the appropriate hardware (Wii Remote, Wii Remote + Nunchuk, etc.) to play the available titles. Titles that were previously compatible with the Classic Controller will be able to use things like the Wii U Gamepad and the Wii U Pro Controller. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is available right now. Punch-Out!! will be available on January 22nd, while Metroid Prime Trilogy will come on January 29th. Each title will be available for half price during their launch week. More Wii titles on the way.
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse has amiibo functionality
While looking astoundingly adorable, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse also comes with amiibo functionality. Using the Kirby amiibo allows you to use the Star Dash whenever you please, instead of collecting 100 Stars as usual. King Dedede’s amiibo will give you a special hat to allow you six health slots instead of Kirby’s usual four. Meta Knight’s amiibo will give Kirby a special hat/mask that gives his tap dash greater potential. Each amiibo can only be used once per day. Kirby and the Rainbow Curse is out on February 20th, 2015.
New amiibo coming soon
In addition, a Super Mario series of amiibo are on the way. On March 20th, 2015, you’ll be able to purchase Mario (again), Luigi (again), Princess Peach (again), Yoshi (again), Bowser (again), and Toad (not again). All redundant amiibo will work the same as one another.
Mario Party 10 to have amiibo functionality
To coincide with the Super Mario amiibo line, Mario Party 10 will launch on March 20th and carry with it amiibo functionality. Using amiibo with Mario Party 10 introduces amiibo mode in the game, which allows you to play with the pieces in-game on special boards relating to the characters. In addition to the aforementioned amiibo, Mario Party 10 is also compatible with Rosalina & Luma, Donkey Kong, and Wario amiibo.
If you use your Super Smash Bros. amiibo in Mario Party 10, you will have to erase your Smash data to use it in the new Mario Party.
Special bundles of Mario Party 10 will include the new Mario amiibo.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker will use Toad amiibo
The Toad amiibo will hide a pixel Toad throughout Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker to allow you to replay the game with this new challenge. The update rolls out on March 20th, alongside the new amiibo.
Splatoon will have a hub to connect all game modes
The highly anticipated third-person shooter on the Wii U, Splatoon, already has several game modes announced, but a new hub level will connect all the modes and allow you to interact with other Inklings that are received via Miiverse.
Splatoon will be out in May 2015.
Tingle to be DLC for Hyrule Warriors
Young Link will also be playable and come with the handy Kokiri Sword. In addition, the Fierce Diety’s Mask will be at his disposal for extra power.
This pack will be available on February 5th, and have three additional costumes for existing characters and a new Adventure Mode map.
New trailer for Xenoblade Chronicles X
Mario vs Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars allows you to tip other players
Creating levels and collecting stars have been mainstays in the Mario vs Donkey Kong games. Now, there’s extra incentive to create levels, as players can now “tip” level creators with stars if they like their builds. More stars means you can unlock more parts to create more levels!
The game will be released simultaneously on both Wii U and 3DS. Anyone who buys the Wii U version will snag themselves a free download code for the handheld one. And vice versa.
Mario vs Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars will be out March 5th and will only be available through digital means.
“Project Treasure” will be a free, online multiplayer game
Not much is known about the currently unnamed Project Treasure, but the game from Bandai Namco will be available for free (and be free to play) on all Wii U consoles and to anyone with a Nintendo Network ID.
Nintendo going deep with digital and indie on Wii U and 3DS
Elliot Quest (PlayEveryWare), Blek (BROKEN RULES & kunabi brother), Citizens of Earth (Eden Industries & ATLUS), Gunman Clive 2 (Horberg Productions), new episodes of Moon Chronicles (Renegade Kid), SEGA 3D Classics includes After Burner II, Fantasy Zone, Out Run, Fantasy Zone II, and Thunder Blade (SEGA), Etrian Mystery Dungeon (SpikeChunsoft & ATLUS), and Story of Seasons (Marvelous & XSEED).
Fossil Fighters Frontier will also be available at retail and digital on March 20th, 2015.
New Nintendo 3DS coming February 13th, 2015
We already know all the details about the New Nintendo 3DS, such as its more powerful hardware, amiibo compatibility on the bottom screen, its exclusive line of upcoming titles, face tracking 3D functionality, and its second stick for camera control, but we have a release date for North America! February 13th, 2015 will see the red and black versions of the upgraded handheld.
New 3DS has loads of changes
In addition to some listed above, the New 3DS includes things such as a longer battery life, automatically-adjusting screen brightness depending on lighting conditions, and now you’ll be able to use microSD cards versus standard ones. The new system will also not come with an AC adapter, but any existing 3DS wall charging unit will work with the new handheld.
Abraham Lincoln will fend off an alien invasion in Codename: Steam
You read that right. President Lincoln will combine the powers of historical and literary figures on the Nintendo 3DS in Codename: Steam. The creators of Fire Emblem and Advance Wars are uniting to create a combination turn-based strategy and real-time action, akin to games like X-COM. The game also has amiibo functionality, so all Fire Emblem characters in Super Smash Bros. will appear in the game. Amiibo characters that fall during battle cannot be revived during checkpoint, but can be brought back by tapping the amiibo to the screen again after a match is over.
Marth amiibo, though in rare supply right now, will also be reissued.
Codename: Steam is out on March 13th, 2015.
Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy+ to be on 3DS
The fighter jet shooter is gracing the handheld with enhanced functionality and amiibo compatibility to unlock ships on February 13th.
Ironfall: Invasion is a shooter on the 3DS
Though not quite in line with Nintendo’s regular exclusives, Ironfall: invasion seems to be a robot-based militaristic futuristic third-person shooter for the 3DS. Not a lot of details exist, but the game runs at 60fps on the handheld, which is impressive in itself. The game was created by three indie dev teams and takes great advantage of the New 3DS C-Stick, but is playable on all 3DS family platforms.
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate New 3DS on the way
Launching for $229, exclusively at GameStop, the special edition Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate New 3DS will come with a copy of the game and be $10 off from buying both the handheld and the game separately.
This bundle will be available on launch day of the New 3DS, February 13th, 2015.
Majora’s Mask on 3DS looks great
But we knew that already. However, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask will also take advantage of the New 3DS hardware. In that you’ll, for the first time ever, have full control of the game’s camera to take in the scenery. The game will also release on February 13th, 2015.
There is also a Special Edition Majora’s Mask New 3DS releasing on February 13th, but it’s now sold out online and most retailers are likely no longer taking preorders.
That’s all for this Nintendo Direct! You can watch the whole thing right here in case you feel we missed something.
