12 Final Fantasy XII (2)

This game is becoming a repeat of Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy IX. Until now those were the only two games that took more than my guideline 24 days to complete. FFIX (after factoring in my month-long holiday) took around 30 days, and FFIV took 33 days, owing simply to time constraints. Well more important commitments and obligations keep popping up as I work my way slowly through Final Fantasy XII, as I have now passed day 25 with with game and I’m still only 20 to 25 hours in.

Honestly, I don’t have a whole lot to say this week that I haven’t said already in the last three entries. I’ve covered the characters and political dramas, talked about the Gambits and the Quickenings, and discussed the drastic difficulty curve and mid-game monotony. Really, what else is there to say until I’ve progressed further?

Well perhaps this is as good a time as any to briefly announce my hopeful (but currently quite tentative) plans for Final Fantasy XIII’s playthrough.

There’s nothing set in stone, but if everything comes together I would like to officially attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the “Longest marathon on a Japanese role-playing game (JRPG).” The current record is set at 38 hours and 6 minutes by a woman in Spain, who played Final Fantasy X during that time, which simultaneously earned her the world record for “Longest videogame marathon on Final Fantasy.”

According to howlongtobeat.com, the average completion time for Final Fantasy XIII is around 50 hours. That means if I sat down and played through FFXIII in a single go, I could break both of those records at once.

guinness world record

Staying awake for two days straight is a challenge in and of itself (much more difficult than many people realize), but my biggest hurdle is fulfilling all of Guinness’s criteria regarding playing at a public venue, having witnesses present the entire time who come and go on shifts, and recording it all (streaming doesn’t count). My request has been officially accepted by Guinness, but the devil is in the details. If I can’t get all that stuff organized before my baby is born in less than a month, it’s just not going to happen. I’ll need to play it through over a few weeks like the rest of my marathon.

So yeah. That’s my goal, and that’s all I’ve got for this week. Hopefully I’ll have a bit more progress with Final Fantasy XII to comment on next week! Go give me a follow over on Twitter, and watch the #RoadtoXVin15 hashtag to keep up with my in-game progress!
